We killed the subscription: why agents should pay per call
Agents use a tool for one task, then move on. Monthly plans were built for humans. Here is why AMXP charges per call from one balance instead.
A person signs up for a tool, learns it, and uses it every day. A monthly plan fits that. An agent does something else: it needs a scraper for one task, a voice model for the next, company data for the one after, and it may not touch any of them again for a week.
Put that agent on subscriptions and you pay for six tools all month to use each one for a few minutes.
The subscription stack
A modest research agent today needs some mix of web search, a scraper, a sales-data source, an SEO tool, a media model and a voice API. Each one means:
- an account, usually with a card on file,
- an API key to store and rotate,
- an entry tier with a monthly minimum,
- usage limits that reset on a calendar you don't control,
- one more invoice.
Most of what you pay for goes unused, and each new capability you want to try adds another sign-up.
What changes when the agent holds the wallet
With AMXP the agent has one balance. When it needs a capability, it searches the catalog, reads the price of the call, and runs it. The cost is reserved before the call and only the exact amount is settled afterwards. If the provider fails, the reservation is released.
You pay for the calls your agent makes. Nothing else.
You still set the limits
Paying per call doesn't mean an open tab. You set a monthly cap, a ceiling per call and an auto top-up threshold. The agent can't spend past them, and every call shows up in one ledger.
Why not just give the agent your keys?
You can, and for a service you already use every day you should keep doing that. AMXP covers the long tail: the tools your agent needs once a week, the ones you'd never sign up for, and the ones it doesn't know about yet. A good agent checks your own tools first and comes to AMXP for the gaps.
What this costs you
AMXP passes on the provider's price plus a small, visible fee per call. Your agent sees the total before it runs anything. See pricing for how balances, reservations and top-ups work.
